The Soviet Union feared it would be hit with a nuclear strike if it was blamed for putting "neurotic maniac" Lee Harvey Oswald up to assassinating John F Kennedy, newly released files have revealed.
The trove of 2,800 files were published on the National Archives website Thursday night, but President Donald Trump kept at least 300 documents back so federal agencies could black out portions.
In one FBI document dated December 1, 1963, from director J Edgar Hoover, the agency reveals everything it had learned about the Soviet reaction to the JFK assassination and what its agents might have known about Oswald.
The tranche of documents reveal that the Soviet Union was just as obsessed with conspiracy theories surrounding Kennedy's death as the rest of the world, even believing Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson could have been behind the assassination.
"According to our source, officials of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union believed there was some well-organized conspiracy on the part of the 'ultraright' in the United States to effect a 'coup'."

The FBI's source also noted that Soviet officials were fearful that "without leadership, some irresponsible general in the United States might launch a missile at the Soviet Union."
So concerned that a panicked U.S. military would lash out at them, Soviet spies were tasked with trying to establish exactly what kind of person Lyndon B. Johnson was.
It also led Soviet officials to conclude that only "maniacs would think that the 'left' forces in the United States, as represented by the Communist Party, USA, would assassinate President Kennedy, especially in view of the abuse the Communist Party, USA, has taken from the "ultraleft" as a result of its support for "the peaceful coexistence and the disarmament policies of the Kennedy administration," the document reads:

One Soviet leader, Colonel Boris Ivanov, Chief of the Soviet Committee for State Security (KGB) held a meeting with KGB personnel on November 25, 1963.
According to the documents, he told those present that JFK's assassination had "posed a problem for the KGB and stated that it was necessary for all KGB employees to lend their efforts to solving the problem."
The FBI's source said that Ivanov believed the president's assassination "had been planned byan organized group rather than being the act of one individual assassin." Ivanov also stated that it was the KGB's job to get to the bottom of things and figure out "all of the possible groups which might have worked behind the scenes to organize and plan" the president's assassination.

After JFK was shot, in a state of shock Jackie Kennedy reached back towards the trunk it is believed to retrieve a piece of her husband's scalp. According to a radio announcer at the time of the tragedy, he reported: "Mrs. Kennedy cried 'Oh no!' and tried to hold up his head" / Bystanders looked on as Jacqueline Kennedy reached over to help her husband who lay on the rear of a car after being struck

The collection includes more than 3,100 documents -- comprising hundreds of thousands of pages -- that have never been seen by the public.

The CIA source "got the impression that Chairman Khrushchev had some dark thoughts about the American Right Wing being behind this conspiracy."
When the source said that Oswald and his eventual killer Jack Ruby both were "mad" and "acted on his own ... Kruschev said flatly that he did NOT believe this."
The White House released 2,891 documents related to JFK's assassination that have long been kept secret. But some are being held back by the president, who said he's allowing intelligence, law enforcement and military agencies to take the next six months to justify their requests to redact specific pages.
A White House official told DailyMail.com during a conference call that while Trump wants to remove the "veil" of secrecy regarding the 1963 killing, he has "no choice today but to accept those redactions rather than risk irreversible harm" to the country.
"There does remain sensitive information in the records," the official said, often "related to the identity of individuals involved, in their roles as informants."
The official also said some edits would be made to hide "activities that were conducted with foreign partner agencies."
After the release of the documents, President Trump claimed he had "no choice" but to keep some of the documents secret for six months so spies can redact portions. President Trump (and Biden) are the only persons who can stop any of the documents from becoming public.
President Trump pledged in a tweet on Saturday that --"subject to the receipt of further information" -- he will allow the "long blocked and classified JFK files to be opened"
The White House said that the files in the National Archives and Records Administration are only those that will be released 'in full' – and agencies will be able to roll out partially edited documents over the next weeks.
"The vast majority of the requests came from the FBI and CIA," a White House official said.
The administration has essentially "kicked the can a bit," a White House aide admitted after a conference call with reporters on Thursday.
"We can't keep this up forever," he admitted, "but it's better to get it right than to do it quickly."
Another of the documents released on Thursday night (December 15th, 2017) reveal how FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover appeared to be particularly concerned that the public would have to be compelled to believe that Oswald was a lone actor — not part of a larger conspiracy.
On Nov. 24, 1963, the day Jack Ruby killed Lee Harvey Oswald as Oswald was being transported to the Dallas County Jail after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Hoover wrote in a memo:
"There is nothing further on the Oswald case except that he is dead. Last night, we received a call in our Dallas office from a man talking in a calm voice and saying he was a member of a committee organized to kill Oswald."
Referring to Nicholas Katzenbach, the deputy attorney general at the time, Hoover said:
"The thing I am concerned about, and so is Mr. Katzenbach, is having something issued so we can convince the public that Oswald is the real assassin."
It's not clear from this document whether the FBI Director actually believed Oswald was the killer or rather that there might have been a conspiracy, but didn't want it to be known, in order to prevent public fear and outrage.
Hoover also made clear that his concern may have been influenced by diplomacy, suggesting there would be serious international problems if the public thought Oswald was acting as part of a larger conspiracy. In the 1964 Warren Report on Kennedy's assassination, Hoover was clear in stating that he hadn't seen "any scintilla of evidence" to suggest a conspiracy.
The newly released documents reveal how Hoover condemned the Dallas Police Department for not preventing Oswald's killing by Ruby, a Dallas nightclub owner. Hoover stated that he was assured by Dallas police that they would give the shooting suspect protection, but Jack Ruby managed to kill him on November 24, 1963, two days after JFK's assassination.
"Oswald having been killed today after our warnings to the Dallas Police Department was inexcusable," Hoover wrote.
"It will allow, I am afraid, a lot of civil rights people to raise a lot of hell because he was handcuffed and had no weapon. There are bound to be some elements of our society who will holler their heads off that his civil rights were violated -- which they were."

The Soviets believed U.S. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson could have been behind the assassination of John F. Kennedy, according to a memo from FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover.
The FBI memo, dated December 1, 1966, quotes a US intelligence mole in Russia as saying that the KGB "was in possession of data purporting to indicate President Johnson was responsible for the assassination of the late President John F. Kennedy."
The potentially explosive document is just one of 2,981 never-before-seen records relating to the JFK assassination released early today (December 15th, 2017).
It was forwarded in a message to the White House called "Reaction of Soviet and Communist Party officials to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy."
It said: "KGB headquarters indicated that in view of this information, it was necessary for the Soviet Government to know the existing personal relationship between President Johnson and the Kennedy family, particularly that between President Johnson and Robert and 'Ted' Kennedy."

The message, forwarded by Hoover to Johnson's aide Marvin Watson, says Moscow believed JFK's murder was a "well-organized conspiracy on the part of the “ultraright' in the United States to effect a 'coup'."
"They seemed convinced that the assassination was not the deed of one man, but it arose out of a carefully planned campaign in which several people played a part," says the memo.
It's not the first time LBJ, who was sworn into office on Air Force One in Dallas before the presidential plane carried JFK's body back to Washington, has been linked to a murder conspiracy.
JFK's widow Jackie, famously pictured alongside Johnson at the inauguration, still wearing her blood-spattered pink Chanel suit, is said to have had her own suspicions about her husband's successor. She reportedly told friends that she believed Johnson and a cabal of Texas tycoons had orchestrated the Dallas shooting and a series of books have theorized that the Vice President was the mastermind.

However, this is the first time Johnson has been connected with the conspiracy in a government document.
The FBI wrote that on November 25, 1963, Colonel Boris Ivanov, the Soviet spy chief in New York, ordered KGB agents to launch an urgent investigation into then President Johnson's background.
Nearly two years later, the note continues, the same U.S. intelligence source said that instructions came through from KGB headquarters in Moscow, dated September 16, 1965, saying that "now" the KGB was "in possession of data purporting to indicate President Johnson was responsible for the assassination of the late President John F. Kennedy.
"KGB headquarters indicated that in view of this information, it was necessary for the Soviet Government to know the existing personal relationship between President Johnson and the Kennedy family, particularly that between President Johnson and Robert and 'Ted' Kennedy."
Following the assassination, the memo continues, the Soviets passed on to Washington its complete consular file on Oswald and his wife, Marina.

According to the documents, two months before Kennedy's assassination, Oswald was intercepted speaking to a KGB officer in "broken Russian."
"According to an intercepted phone call in Mexico City, Lee Oswald was at the Soviet Embassy there on 28 September 1963 and spoke with the Consul, Valeriy Vladimirovich Kostikov," one document reads.
The CIA document says the agency learned of Oswald's visit to Mexico City when he called the Soviet Embassy on October 1, "identifying himself by name and speaking broken Russian."
According to the document he "asked the guard who answered the phone whether there was "anything new concerning the telegram to Washington."
Kostikov was a senior agent in the 13th Department which was responsible for assassinations.
Another document reveals the FBI was aware of the meeting on October 1 of 1963, more than a month before JFK was killed, meaning Oswald was already on their radar.

In the documents FBI agents were grilled by a Senate committee about failing to stop Oswald's visit to Mexico in September, two months before JFK was killed on November 22 of 1963.
An FBI agent said: "Oswald wrote me in early 1962 to help expedite an exit visa for his wife. Why in the world would he tell a plopper like that?"

This odd comment alone (by an FBI agent) shows how close the actual liaison was between Lee Oswald and the FBI.
Lee Oswald actually told Dallas PD Chief Will Fritz “Call Warren De Bruys, he can tell you who I am.”
Oswald asked Fritz to call FBI agent Warren De Brueys because De Brueys could could identify and vouch for him.
How many of us, readers or reporters, could call upon an FBI agent to help out personally with a visa request?
More importantly, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover knew about Lee Harvey Oswald’s “defection” to the USSR. Hoover also learned of the existence of an “Oswald Double” in 1959 (while Oswald was in Russia) when it was discovered that someone was using Lee Oswald’s name to rent trucks to ship arms to anti-Castro Cubans across the south from Dallas & New Orleans to Florida.
This anti-Castro gun-running operation ties Oswald (and the “Oswald Double”) directly to Jack Ruby in Dallas and to former FBI agent Guy Bannister in New Orleans who were both involved in supplying guns to anti-Castro groups.

Clearly, Lee Oswald was connected by several ‘tentacles’ directly with the FBI.

"In any event, he told what the agent knew was lies, and what I am trying to get at is there was no analysis within the bureau of any of this. He even goes to Mexico City, contacts the Cuban consulate and the Soviet embassy, happens to be in contact – we don't know if there is anything sinister about it – with an agent who is known to be KGB by the FBI and by the CIA, and suspected of being Department 13, which is their assassination and sabotage squad.
In any event, he then returns to the United States, is never again interviewed by the FBI."
A memorandum dated July 1969, titled "An investigation of Lee Harvey Oswald in Mexico," reports that the infamous assassin was seen at a party in Mexico in late September, 1963.
The CIA document reveals how Oswald went to a party in Mexico, along with two other Americans and hosted by Mexican playwright Elena Garro de Paz.
De Paz was interviewed by the FBI following the assassination who told the FBI about the other Americans with Oswald, but that the "interrogation was entirely unsatisfactory by normal investigatory standards."

It was in Mexico that Oswald, who was a communist, attended the Soviet Embassy in Mexico City on September 28 during the course of his six-day trip.
The FBI had discounted de Paz's accounts, but the CIA was "disturbed" by them. In yet another shocking turn in the events surrounding the assassination and the follow up investigation by the FBI, the documents reveal the FBI's failure to properly investigate de Paz's story could have "damaged" the Warren Report.
The Warren Report, or Warren Commission was the government's investigation into Oswald and the assassination, and it concluded that he acted alone. The report says "the credibility of the Warren Report would be damaged all the more if it were learned that these allegations were known and never adequately investigated by the competent American authorities."
It has been reported that Oswald was a good shot, but the speculation mounts that he may not have acted alone as more is revealed about his trip to Mexico.
Another document says the CIA's "plan in passing information to the Warren Commission was to eliminate mention of wire taps in order to protect their continuing operations" suggesting the spy agency withheld material from the investigation.
CIA's Elaborate schemes to kill Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
The CIA concocted a series of outlandish schemes to kill Cuban leader Fidel Castro, the newly released JFK files have revealed. Some of the more bizarre ideas involved giving diving enthusiast Castro a contaminated wetsuit or loading a "spectacular" seashell with explosives and hiding it at the bottom of a bay in the Caribbean.
The 1975 report, released along with 2,800 previously classified documents, contains details of covert efforts to kill the Cuban then-Prime Minister. One scheme involved discussions inside the CIA about "trying to have General Donovan, who was negotiating with Fidel Castro for the release of the Bay of Pigs prisoners, give Fidel Castro a contaminated skin diving suit," the document reads.
Skin diving is also known as freediving, or breath-hold underwater diving, an activity that Castro was known to enjoy.

"The CIA plan was to dust the inside of the suit with a fungus producing Madera foot, a disabling and chronic skin disease, and also contaminating the suit with tuberculosis bacilli in the breathing apparatus."
"The sea-shell would be loaded with explosives to blow apart when the shell was lifted," according to the files.
However, the idea was dropped after an investigation found that there was "no shell in the Caribbean area large enough to hold a sufficient amount of explosive which was spectacular enough to attract the attention of Castro."
The report also revealed that JFK's brother, then-Attorney General Robert Kennedy, had learned that the CIA had tried to pay an Italian mafioso to kill Castro. Robert Kennedy told the FBI that the CIA had tasked a go-between with approaching Sicilian-American gangster Sam Giancana "with a proposition of paying $150,000 to hire some gunman to go into Cuba and kill Castro."
This had reportedly then made it difficult to prosecute Giancana.
"Attorney General Kennedy stated that the CIA should never undertake the use of mafia people again without first checking with the Department of Justice because it would be difficult to prosecute such people in the future," the report reads.
And while Castro told American lawmakers that Cuba was not involved in the plot to kill Kennedy when White House investigators visited the island in 1978, his ambassador was allegedly delighted to hear of the assassination.
According to one CIA document, dated 1963, the Cuban ambassador to the U.S. reacted with "happy delight" to the murder,.
The document noted that the Cuban ambassador to the United Nations indicated in a speech that the Cuban ambassador to the U.S. and his staff "might be expected to adopt [a] more somber attitude in public," following Kennedy's assassination.
Not long after the Cuban ambassador's initial reaction, he was sent a cable which ordered him and his staff "to cease looking happy in public." FBI informant claimed Dallas police officer J.D Tippit was the REAL JFK assassin -- not Lee Harvey Oswald, secret files reveal.

An FBI informant identified Dallas police officer J.D Tippit as the actual killer of John F. Kennedy, the documents reveal the newly released assassination file documents reveal. Patrolman Tippit was shot dead by Oswald 45 minutes after he also assassinated Kennedy on November 22 1963.
According to a note sent to the FBI, an informant was told by an H. Theodore Lee in Dallas that "the president was actually assassinated by Dallas police officer TIPPIT." The informant also told Lee that the information came from individuals previously active in the Fair Play for Cuba Committee (FPCC).
The note also says a week before the assassination Tippit and Ruby met with the alleged ‘head of the right-wing John Birch Society in Dallas,” and a third party who was possibly Oswald, in Jack Ruby's nightclub.
The records also allege that before the assassination Oswald met Ruby in a Florida airport as part of a group heading to Cuba to "cut sugar cane" and were heard discussing "Big Bird" by an informant.
Lee himself told the FBI, Oswald was somehow involved in both the FPCC and anti-Castro movements so was able to see "both sides of the issues involved."

J.D Tippit was in his patrol car when he stopped a man asserted by the Warren Commission to have been Oswald Oswald walking down Patton Avenue.
However, 2 other witnesses, a shoe store salesman and a ticket vendor, identified Lee Oswald s entering the Texas Theater (where he was arrested by Dallas police) just before 1 p.m.
The warren Commission claims that Tippit talked to Lee Oswald through the window and got out of his patrol car.
Seconds later, the Warren commission claims that Oswald shot him three times with a .38 caliber revolver and fired once more into the officer's right temple as he lay on the Dallas sidewalk.
Officer Tippit was dead before any help could arrive.
Oswald was arrested for acting suspiciously and ducking into the Texas Theater without buying a ticket as police sirens approached.
An anonymous call to British newspaper 25 minutes BEFORE the JFK assassination tipped a reporter to contact the U.S. Embassy "for some big news."
A CIA cable also revealed that a British newspaper reporter had received an anonymous call 25 minutes before the JFK assassination tipping him to call the U.S. Embassy "for some big news."
The strange call to the Cambridge News on November 22, 1963 was recounted in a memo from the CIA to the FBI. The memo is based on a CIA Station London cable sent just the morning after the assassination.
The senior reporter at the newspaper in Cambridge, England said he received an anonymous telephone call at 6:05 p.m. GMT on November 22, urging him to "call the American Embassy in London for some big news."
The newsman reported the strange call to authorities, and MI-5, the UK's domestic security service, determined that the call had taken place 25 minutes before the U.S. president was shot an ocean away in Dallas.

MI-5 advised their CIA counterparts that the reporter was "known to them as a sound and loyal person with no security record."
The British security service noted that the coincidental timing of the call fit the pattern of similar calls made across the UK in connection with the "case of Dr. Ward." This is an apparent reference to Stephen Ward, an osteopath at the center of the 1963 Profumo Affair, a British political scandal.

The documents also reveal the FBI warned Robert F. Kennedy about a book regarding his alleged affair with Marilyn Monroe.
The 11-page FBI document, categorized under "Miscellaneous Records of the Church Committee," contains multiple memos — including one from then FBI director J. Edgar Hoover to Robert Kennedy, himself, written during a two-week period in 1964, regarding Frank A. Capell's book, "The Strange Death of Marilyn Monroe."
According to the memos, Capell, who lived on Staten Island, New York, had gone to the New York FBI field office on July 2, 1964, to alert them that he was writing the 70-page book, which would be published on July 10, 1964 and sell for $2.00 a copy.
In what appears to be Hoover's memo to Kennedy, dated July 8, 1964, Hoover wrote that Capell had said he would "make reference to your alleged friendship with the late Miss Marilyn Monroe" and that he intended to "indicate in his book that you and Miss Monroe were intimate and and that you were in Miss Monroe's apartment at the time of her death."

Recently released FBI files reveal that the FBI director J. Edgar Hoover wrote memos to Robert F. Kennedy about a book claiming RFK had an affair with Monroe and he was at her home when she committed suicide.
Monroe died on August 5, 1962 of a barbiturate overdose in her Los Angeles home However, as one of the FBI memos indicated, the claim that Kennedy was with her was proven false, as Kennedy was in San Francisco with his wife at the time of Monroe's death.
Capell's book also claimed that "Miss Monroe's involvement with Kennedy "was well known to her friends and reporters in the Hollywood area," but was never publicized," an FBI agent reported.

The agent also wrote in the memo that, according to the book, 'Miss Monroe "was led to believe his intentions were serious," and that Kennedy had promised to divorce his wife and marry her.
"When he failed to do so, the book charges, she "threatened to expose their relationship," which would have ruined his presidential aspirations. It was then that Kennedy decided "to take drastic action."
The "drastic action," according to Capell's book, was that Kennedy "used 'the Communist Conspiracy which is expert in the scientific elimination of its enemies' to dispose of Miss Monroe by making her murder appear to be a suicide."
Achievable, apparently, because Monroe's personal physician, Dr. Hyman Engelberg, "was a communist."
Although the FBI memos seemed to be highly skeptical about the veracity of Capell's claims, it is clear that Capell and the book itself were very much on their radar.
In one memo, Hoover instructed the Special Agent in Charge of the New York office to "follow this matter very closely. Furnish two copies of the book to the Bureau promptly upon publication in order that the Attorney General may be kept advised."

October 1962: Cuban Missile crisis which is regarded as the closest the world ever came to nuclear war. Tensions rose after the USSR placed nuclear weapons in Cuba within striking distance of the U.S. The crisis eventually passed without a shot being fired.
June 11, 1963: The President calls for civil rights legislation to be brought in.
August 5, 1963: The U.S. and the USSR sign a nuclear test ban treaty pledging not to test bombs in air, space and water.
November 22, 1963: The President was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. He was shot once in the back and then in the head.

12:29 p.m. Central Standard Time:
The presidential motorcade turns onto Dealey Plaza in Dallas.
The open-top limousine has a driver and security guard in the front row, Texas Governor John Connally and wife Nellie Connally in the middle row, and President John F Kennedy and wife Jacqueline in the back row.
12:30 p.m.: Witnesses testified that three shots were fired. The famous video recording of the event filmed by onlooker Abraham Zapruder shows that first Kennedy clutches his chest and seems to gasp before another shot hits his head. Governor Connally is also hit. Mrs. Kennedy immediately begins climbing towards the back of the vehicle, apparently in an effort to grab part of the President's
skull which flew back after he was shot. The Connallys reported that Mrs. Kennedy said "I've got his brains in my hand!"
12:33 p.m.: (Purported) Shooter Lee Harvey Oswald exits the Texas School Book Depository, where he fired the shots from a sixth floor window.
12:38 p.m.: The presidential limo arrives at Parkland Hospital.
1 p.m.: President Kennedy is pronounced dead. A Catholic priest had been found and he performed his last rites. Doctors said that while they tried extremely hard to save his life, the wounds were too great by the time he arrived in the hospital. "We never had any hope of saving his life," said Dr. Malcolm Perry.
1:15 p.m.: Oswald (purportedly) shoots and kills police officer J.D. Tippit while he is on the run.
1:33 p.m.: White House press secretary Malcolm Kilduff entered the area of the hospital where the press had gathered and made a brief statement confirming the President's death, as caused by a gunshot wound to the brain.
1:50 p.m.: Oswald is arrested inside the Texas Theater movie house where he went in an effort to evade capture.
2:00 p.m.: President Kennedy's body was brought to Air Force One.
2:38 p.m.: Lyndon Baines Johnson was sworn in as the country's 36th president on board Air Force One, standing next to Mrs Kennedy who continued to wear the blood-stained pink skirt suit that she had on earlier.
3:01 p.m.: FBI director J. Edgar Hoover writes a memo saying that the President's killer had been captured.
6 p.m. Eastern Standard Time: The plane arrives at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington. President Kennedy's casket and Mrs Kennedy leave first before President Johnson makes a brief statement on the tarmac.
"This is a sad time for all people ... I will do my best; that is all I can do. I ask for your help and God's," he said.
7:05 p.m. CST: Oswald is charged with the murder of Officer Tippit.
11:26 p.m.: Oswald is charged with the murder of President Kennedy.
Two days later, November 24, 1963
11:21 a.m.: Television cameras catch nightclub owner Jack Ruby shoot Oswald in the basement of the Dallas Police headquarters.
